Tudor House Worcester England

Tudor House has had a varied life in the five centuries since it was built. It has been used as a work place for weavers, clothiers, tailors, bakers, painters and brewers. It was used as lodgings, the Cross Keys Inn, Cadbury's Tudor Coffee House, an air raid wardens' post and billet office, a school clinic and a museum.

A group of volunteers known as Worcester Heritage & Amenity Trust opened the doors in May 2004 to keep the building available to the public as Tudor House Heritage & Education Centre. Displays of local history, crafts and culture over several rooms are complemented by a shop and coffee room serving drinks and cakes.

Worcester Literary Featival

Hive-Worcester
THE finishing touches are being put in place for tonight’s launch of the inaugural Worcestershire Literary Festival.

Hundreds of events from children’s storytelling to a competition to find the county’s first poet laureate will take place across the city and beyond over the next 10 days as part of the celebration of the written word.

Festival director Lisa Ventura said there had been a last-minute flurry of new events as residents rushed to make their contribution to the festival.

She said: “People have just really got on board with it.

“I’m really excited and I just need to thank all the volunteers because without them, the festival wouldn’t have grown as it has.

“I’ve seen it go from what started as a small three or four-day event and flourish. It not just encompasses Worcester, but the whole county – it’s just amazing.”

The Worcestershire Literary Festival team can be found at their office next to the Entertainer in CrownGate, Worcester, every day during the festival from 10am to 4pm.

Fees will put off Teenages applying for University

Hive-Worcester.co.uk
A poll of university vice-chancellors shows that nearly half believe that it will become more difficult to convince young people of the benefits of a degree once higher tuition fees have been introduced.

Amid fears of a fall in applications next year, 42% of vice-chancellors said that it would be harder to dissuade teenagers from going straight into work or taking a cheaper educational option. Nearly a quarter said that they would have to do more to demonstrate an improved student experience, while 15% said that they would increasingly be trying to persuade parents of the value of degrees rather than just their children...more

Worcester libraries avoid the axe

Hive-Worcester
From The Standard, Worcester, Friday June 3 2011
The future of Worcester's libraries looks to have been secured after a countrywide review of the service recommended they should remain open.
The main Worcester Library on Foregate Street is already set to move into the multi-million pound History and Library Centre The Hive next year. Although Warndon Library was ranked 18th out of the 21 libraries around the county, it has been saved because the review recognised it was serving a disadvantaged community, and is part of a range of other services at the Fairfield Centre, including adult learning, a health centre, a children's centre and a nursery.
St John's library was saved because it has recently been refurbished using Lottery funding, and could link into a range of other services offered by Worcester City Council and the University of Worcester. more here...
